כבר שנא דלית ביה חובין כן שאול כד מלך ותרתין שנין מלך על ישראל:
yshral el mlk shnyn wthrthyn mlk kd shawl kn khwbyn byh dlyth shna kbr
Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.

ובחר ליה שאול תלתא אלפין מישראל והוו עם שאול תרין אלפין במכמש ובטור בית אל ואלפא הוו עם יונתן בגבעתא דבית בנימין ושאר עמא שלח גבר לקירוהי:
lqyrwhy gbr shlkh ema wshar bnymyn dbyth bgbetha ywnthn em hww walpa al byth wbTwr bmkmsh alpyn thryn shawl em whww myshral alpyn thltha shawl lyh wbkhr
Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. He sent the rest of the people to their own tents.

ומחא יונתן ית אסטרטיגי פלישתאי די בגבעתא ושמעו פלשתאי ושאול תקע בשופרא בכל ארעא למימר ישמעון יהודאי:
yhwday yshmewn lmymr area bkl bshwpra thqe wshawl plshthay wshmew bgbetha dy plyshthay asTrTygy yth ywnthn wmkha
Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”

וכל ישראל שמעו למימר מחא שאול ית אסטרטיגי פלישתאי ואף אתגרי ישראל בפלשתאי ואתכנישו עמא בתר שאול לגלגלא:
lglgla shawl bthr ema wathknyshw bplshthay yshral athgry wap plyshthay asTrTygy yth shawl mkha lmymr shmew yshral wkl
All Israel heard that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was considered an abomination to the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.

ופלשתאי אתכנישו לאגחא קרבא בישראל תלתין אלפין רתיכין ושתא אלפין פרשין ועמא כחלא דעל כיף ימא לסגי וסליקו ושרו במכמש מדנח בית און:
awn byth mdnkh bmkmsh wshrw wslyqw lsgy yma kyp del kkhla wema prshyn alpyn wshtha rthykyn alpyn thlthyn byshral qrba lagkha athknyshw wplshthay
The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel: thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven.

ואנש ישראל חזו ארי עקת להון ארי אידחק עמא ואטמרו עמא במערתא ובמצדתא ובשקיפי כיפיא ובמערת טינרא ובגוביא:
wbgwbya Tynra wbmerth kypya wbshqypy wbmtsdtha bmertha ema waTmrw ema aydkhq ary lhwn eqth ary khzw yshral wansh
When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in tombs, and in pits.

ויהודאי עברו ית ירדנא לארע גד וגלעד ושאול עד כען בגלגלא וכל עמא איתכנישו בתרוהי:
bthrwhy aythknyshw ema wkl bglgla ken ed wshawl wgled gd lare yrdna yth ebrw wyhwday
Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

ואוריך שבעא יומין לזימנא דאמר ליה שמואל ולא אתא שמואל לגלגלא ואיתבדר עמא מעילוהי:
meylwhy ema waythbdr lglgla shmwal atha wla shmwal lyh damr lzymna ywmyn shbea wawryk
He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel; but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.

ואמר שאול קריבו לותי עלתא ונכסת קודשיא ואסיק עלתא:
eltha wasyq qwdshya wnksth eltha lwthy qrybw shawl wamr
Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering to me here, and the peace offerings.” He offered the burnt offering.

והוה כשיציותיה לאסקא עלתא והא שמואל אתא ונפק שאול לקדמותיה למשאל בשלמיה:
bshlmyh lmshal lqdmwthyh shawl wnpq atha shmwal wha eltha lasqa kshytsywthyh whwh
It came to pass that as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

ואמר שמואל מה עבדתא ואמר שאול ארי חזיתי ארי אתבדר עמא מעלוי ואת לא אתיתא לזמן יומין ופלשתאי אתכנשו למכמש:
lmkmsh athknshw wplshthay ywmyn lzmn athytha la wath melwy ema athbdr ary khzythy ary shawl wamr ebdtha mh shmwal wamr
Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash,

ואמרית כען יחתון פלשתאי לותי לגלגלא וקדם יי לא צליתי ואתחסנית ואסקית עלתא:
eltha wasqyth wathkhsnyth tslythy la yy wqdm lglgla lwthy plshthay ykhthwn ken wamryth
therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven’t entreated the favor of Yahweh.’ I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.”

ואמר שמואל לשאול טפישתא לא נטרתא ית תפקידתא מימרא דיי אלהך דפקדך ארי כען אתקין יי ית מלכותך על ישראל עד עלמא:
elma ed yshral el mlkwthk yth yy athqyn ken ary dpqdk alhk dyy mymra thpqydtha yth nTrtha la Tpyshtha lshawl shmwal wamr
Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.

וכען מלכותך לא תתקים אתקין יי קדמוהי גבר עביד רעותה ופקדיה יי למהוי מלכא על עמיה ארי לא נטרתא ית דפקדך יי:
yy dpqdk yth nTrtha la ary emyh el mlka lmhwy yy wpqdyh rewthh ebyd gbr qdmwhy yy athqyn ththqym la mlkwthk wken
But now your kingdom will not continue. Yahweh has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.”

וקם שמואל וסליק מן גלגלא לגבעתא דבנימין ומנא שאול ית עמא דאשתכחו עמיה כשית מאה גברא:
gbra mah kshyth emyh dashthkkhw ema yth shawl wmna dbnymyn lgbetha glgla mn wslyq shmwal wqm
Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul counted the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.

ושאול ויונתן בריה ועמא דאשתכח עמהון יתבין בגבעתא דבית בנימן ופלשתאי שרו במכמש:
bmkmsh shrw wplshthay bnymn dbyth bgbetha ythbyn emhwn dashthkkh wema bryh wywnthn wshawl
Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

ונפק מחבלא ממשריתא פלישתאי תלתא משירין משריתא חדא מתפניא לאורח עפרה לארעא דרומא:
drwma larea eprh lawrkh mthpnya khda mshrytha mshyryn thltha plyshthay mmshrytha mkhbla wnpq
The raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;

ומשריתא חדא מתפניא לאורח בית חורון ומשריתא חדא מתפניא לאורח תחומא דמסתכי לחילת אפעיא למדברא:
lmdbra apeya lkhylth dmsthky thkhwma lawrkh mthpnya khda wmshrytha khwrwn byth lawrkh mthpnya khda wmshrytha
another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

ואומן עביד זין לא משתכח בכל תחום ארעא דישראל ארי אמרו פלשתאי דלמא יעבדון יהודאין סיפין או רומחין:
rwmkhyn aw sypyn yhwdayn yebdwn dlma plshthay amrw ary dyshral area thkhwm bkl mshthkkh la zyn ebyd wawmn
Now there was no blacksmith found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears”;

ונחתו כל ישראל לארעא פלשתאי לחרפא גבר ית פרשיה וית סיכת פדניה וית כולביה וית עושפיה:
ewshpyh wyth kwlbyh wyth pdnyh sykth wyth prshyh yth gbr lkhrpa plshthay larea yshral kl wnkhthw
but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, each man to sharpen his own plowshare, mattock, ax, and sickle.

והוי להון שופינא לחרפא ביה פגמת כל מאן דברזל לעושפיא ולסיכת פדניא ולמצלת קצריא די לה תלת שנין ולכולביא ולאנצבא זקת:
zqth wlantsba wlkwlbya shnyn thlth lh dy qtsrya wlmtslth pdnya wlsykth lewshpya dbrzl man kl pgmth byh lkhrpa shwpyna lhwn whwy
The price was one payim each to sharpen mattocks, plowshares, pitchforks, axes, and goads.

והוה ביומא דקרבא ולא אשתכח חרבא ומורניתא ביד כל עמא דעם שאול ועם יונתן ומשכחא לשאול וליונתן בריה:
bryh wlywnthn lshawl wmshkkha ywnthn wem shawl dem ema kl byd wmwrnytha khrba ashthkkh wla dqrba bywma whwh
So it came to pass in the day of battle that neither sword nor spear was found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.
